2023 WWC: Super Falcons Shock Co-hosts Australia 3-2

 Nigeria defeated co-hosts Australia 3-2 on Thursday, to go top of Group B

 



Australia capitalized on a poor goal kick from Nigeria to take the lead with one minutes left of first half stoppage time.

 

Caitlin Ford moved the ball upfield and laid the ball for Emily van Egmond to slot into the net.

 

The Super Falcons responded almost immediately with a goal of their own.


Rasheedat Ajibade speed down the left and cross the ball into the box, Uchenna Kanu then scrambled the ball beyond McKenzie Arnold.

The second half started on a lively note with both teams going out full throttle.

 

Nigeria took the lead for the first time in the game in the 65th minute.

 

Ajibade’s header was saved by Arnold, but she pushed it towards Ohale who bravely nodded home from close range.

 

Substitute Oshoala put the game beyond the Australians 18 minutes from time.

The Barcelona Femeni star slotted home after a sloppy defending from Australia.

 

Kennedy reduced the deficit for Australia deep into the stoppage time.

 

The Super Falcons will take on already eliminated Republic of Ireland in their last group game on Monday.
